Presentation of Hirano’s quilts to the International Quilt Association

On June 13, Acting Consul-General Watabe hosted a ceremony to transfer the quilts of late Yukiko Hirano to the International Quilt Association (IQA) at the Consul-General’s residence. Hirano was a winner of the Founder’s Award for her Baltimore Album IV quilt at the 2005 International Quilt Association Conference. To mark the occasion, IQA founders Karey Bresenhan and Nancy O’Bryant, were invited along with representatives from Quilts Inc. and the Japanese Association of Greater Houston (JAGH). Four of Hirano’s handmade quilts were on display for everyone to enjoy the artistry.

Aside from running the IQA Conference, Founders Bresenhan and O’Bryant are currently working to open a museum dedicated to quilting in the La Grange, Texas. The Texas Quilt Museum will open in the fall of 2011 and will exhibit works to honor and celebrate quilt artistry and history. Yukiko Hirano’s quilts will one day be on display.
