The Consulate-General of Japan in Houston together with Japan Foundation brought Japanese martial arts master Yoshinori Kono to Houston, where he presented workshops, “Samurai Secrets: Ancient Techniques for the Modern World.”
On May 23rd, around 200 junior high schools students and their teachers attended Master Kono’s workshop introducing Ken-jutsu (sword), Jyo-jutsu (long staff), and Tai-jutsu (empty hand). After searching for an appropriate school in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) area to hold the lecture, Sharpstown International School, a school that emphasizes the importance of intercultural education, expressed interest and was chosen to host the school workshop.
Workshops targeting those with martial arts backgrounds were held on May 23rd and 24th at the IMA Karate Houston Dojo. Both evenings had over 70 attendees who enjoyed Master Kono’s demonstrations with the fencing stick, practice sword, and throwing knives. In addition, Master Kono shared with the audience the secrets he had learned from ancient martial arts and showed how the techniques can apply to modern sports and nursing.
