On October 19, Consulate-General of Japan hosted a reception to commemorate the Japan-U.S. Cherry Blossom Centennial and the planting of Japanese cherry trees in the Japanese Garden at Hermann Park.
The Honorable Al Green, Congressman; the Honorable Jack Christie, Council Member; the Honorable Helena Brown, Council Member; were among the guests that attended from various circles. In his remarks (→link) Consul-General Yamamoto praised the cultural diversity found in Houston and expressed the commitment of the Japanese community to add to that core value of the Houston community.
Congressman Al Green presented Consul-General with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in addition to offering congratulatory remarks. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who had also prepared a certificate, was able to offer her congratulations via telephone as urgent business had taken her away to Austin. A representative from Congressman Ted Poe’s office also attended in order to present a certificate to mark the occasion.
