The Dominic Walsh Dance Theater’s world premiere production of Uzume ran October 19th through the 21st at the Asia Society Texas Center. Following the performance on October 20th, the Consulate-General of Japan co-sponsored a reception in honor of the production. Uzume was produced by the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater which is based in Houston, performs internationally, and is also well known in Japan. The collaboration featured the Japanese ballerina Hana Sakai, and Taiko drummer Kensaku Sato to create an integrated work of art. Japanese washi paper was the motif that inspired the set designed and created by local artist Ms. Mari Omori.
In Consul-General’s remarks (link) at the reception following the performance he praised the two Japanese jewels, Ms. Sakai and Mr. Sato. He expressed his respect for the production which combined many Japanese elements and was fitted to represent the cultural diversities found in Houston. Mr. Walsh also gave brief remarks commenting on his passion for Japanese culture and expressing his goodwill towards the local Japanese community.
