On November 15, the Consulate-General and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) co-hosted a reception celebrating the Houston-Chiba Sister City Partnership entering its 40th year and introducing sushi as one example of the Japanese culinary culture. The reception, which was held at the residence of the Consul-General of Japan, was well attended by Houston residents from a wide variety of fields. At the reception, visiting Houston at JETRO’s invitation, Mr. Masayoshi Kazato (Chairman of the Chiba Prefecture Sushi Association) gave a sushi demonstration. In addition soy sauce, rice vinegar, Koshu wine and sake from the Tohoku region were introduced and on display. (→link to Consul-General’s remarks).
Prior to the reception, Mr. Kazato visited Houston City Hall to present a letter from the Honorable Toshihito Kumagai, Mayor of Chiba City to the Honorable Annise Parker, Mayor of the City of Houston. Council member Helena Brown received the letter on behalf of Mayor Parker. The City of Houston presented Mr. Kazato with the Certificate of Honorary Citizenship.
