Exemption of Visas for Nationals of Thailand (Press Release)

  1. In commemoration of the 40th year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, as of July 1st, 2013 nationals of Thailand traveling to Japan for a short term visit not exceeding  15 days and carrying an ordinary IC passport will be exempt from visa requirements. We hope this new exemption will increase the number of tourists who travel to Japan from Thailand and improve the convenience of business transactions, as well as help develop other forms of exchange between Japan and Thailand.
  2. However, those with travel plans besides those described above that exceed 15 days, or those who are traveling to Japan for the purpose of employment and not a short term visit must obtain a visa before arriving in Japan. In addition, this visa exemption is restricted to travelers carrying ordinary IC passports, therefore Thai nationals who do not carry ordinary IC passports must apply for and obtain a visa.
  3. Also, those with previously issued visas cannot receive a refund for any processing fees.
