On Wednesday, February 5th 2014, Consul-General Nozomu Takaoka hosted a reception for the supporters of Asia Society’s Tiger Ball 2014, which will be held on February 27 entitled “Celebrating Japan”. The event was held at the official residence of the Consul-General, co-hosted by Asia Society and United Airlines. Many donors and organizations supportive of Tiger Ball were present that evening and were recognized for their generous supports. The ceremony was further honored by the presence of several Houston City Council members- The Honorable Mayor Pro Tem Ed Gonzalez, The Honorable Ellen Cohen, The Honorable David Robinson and The Honorable Oliver Pennington.
During the ceremony, the Consul-General praised business leaders and financial cheerleaders who were present at the reception for contributing to Houston’s economic prosperity, cultural beauty and intellectual strength. He expressed his hope that Ambassador Sasae’s speech will provide food for thought on the further advancement of the relationship between Japan and the U.S. He also highly spoke of supporters for Tiger Ball 2014 and especially praised Ms. Nancy Allen, board member of Asia Society, for her exquisite taste and strong determination in realizing the creation of the building of Asia Society, which will be the venue for Tiger Ball. Mr. Jim Compton, Vice Chairman of United Airlines, spoke highly of the 15 year partnership between United Airlines and Asia Society. He mentioned this year marks the 15 year anniversary of daily direct flight between Houston and Narita and the second daily flight will begin on March 31. He also declared Tokyo the gateway into Asia, given the city’s many connecting flights for the region and promised to continue to work to strengthen a strong network between United Airlines and Asia. The event also heard from Asia Society’s new Executive Director Bonna Kol, Tiger Ball Chairs Ms. Donna Cole, President and CEO of Cole Chemical and Mr. Glen Gondo, CEO of Gondo Company Inc.
Catering for the event was kindly paid for by United Airlines, and delicious sushi was provided by Mr. Glen Gondo, Chair of Tiger Ball 2014.
