On March 3 and 4, Consul General Takaoka attended the Sun & Star Symposium “Waiting for the Rising Sun” hosted by Southern Methodist University John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies.
The symposium started with introduction by Ambassador Thomas Schieffer of Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage who gave a keynote speech entitled “Japan and the United States in a Region of Flux”. In his speech, Former Secretary Armitage praised the economic and security policy of Prime Minister Abe and expressed his anticipation for Prime Minister’s planned visit to the US at the end of April. Afterwards, 12 panelists gave presentations followed by a lively Q & A session.
The symposium is organized every other year under the Sun & Star Japan and East Asia Program at the Tower Center directed by Professor James Hollifield. This program aims to increase awareness of the economic, historical, political and social trends of Japan and East Asia. Associate Professor Hiroki Takeuchi, director of the Program, was central in organizing this year’s event. |
