On July 24, four Okinawan teachers visited Houston through “the Japan-US Training Exchange Program for English Language Teachers” sponsored by Okinawa Prefectural Board of Education along with 20 Okinawan students under “Experiment in the US High Education” program organized by the Experiment in International Living (EIL). Both teachers and students joined an exchange event by the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston.
At the consulate, Okinawan teachers and students listened to a lecture on “the work of diplomats” by Deputy Consul General Atsushi Iwasaki and then they went to the Double Tree by Hilton where 34 JET participants were gathered prior to their travel to Japan the following day. Ms. Masaki Gibo, Teacher of Mawashi High School, and Mr. Jonah Higaonna, Student of Okinawa Shogaku High School, delivered a presentation respectively on “English Education in Japan” and “My Daily Life”. They subsequently joined the reception for departing JET participants and actively engaged in conversation with them. Two Okinawan high school students played Sanshin, an Okinawan stringed instrument for guests, and thanks to their attendance the participants enjoyed the interaction in a friendly atmosphere. |
