Hatakeyama Naoya (born 1958) is one of the most outstanding photographers of today. His works are found in major public collections in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Hatakeyama´s photographic subject is often Tokyo. He has produced aerial and underground views of the city, and most recently facades of the city.

Hatakeyama´s Tokyo-base works such as River Series, Underground, Maquettes/Light and Untitled have been shown in numerous international exhibitions. His photographic eyes not only contextualize the city in light of the histories of photography and contemporary photographic practice, but also give viewers a chance to imagine the city´s future.

Hatakeyama has been given numerous important awards for his artistic accomplishments, including the 22nd Kimura Ihei Memorial Photography Award in 1997, the 42nd Mainichi Award of Art in 2001 and the Photographer of the Year (2003) Award from the Photographic Society of Japan. He co-represented Japan at the 49th Venice Biennial (2001). His photographs from the series Blast crown the exhibition currently on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Ruptures and Continuities: Photography made after 1960 from the MFAH Collection.
