在ヒューストン日本国総領事 加茂佳彦

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

Thank you, Dr. Otton, for your kind introduction.

It is indeed my pleasure to be here in Corpus Christi to open this wonderful exhibition by a Japanese artist, Akemi Mizoguchi.

This is my second visit to this beautiful seaside town. My last visit here was most memorable and rewarding, as I was invited to attend an opening ceremony for an exhibition for Japanese craftsmanship in pottery, porcelain, and lacquer at the Asian Cultures Museum. I was overwhelmed by the warmest hospitality by the friendliest gathering I have ever had there. The exhibition went very well thanks to the hard work by the museum people. But it was the meeting with Hal and Cindy Holmes that I appreciated most. My visit to Corpus Christi led me to become good friends with the Holmes who are instrumental this time to make this exhibition possible.

Last time I missed to visit the Art Museum of South Texas. I was thrilled this time that I had a chance to visit there. I admire the wonderful building design by Phillip Johnson, of course. I was marveled at collections inside as well. Special exhibition by Birk is just awesome. I found its European painting section quite solid with works by famous masters including Fragonard.

My special thanks go to Akemi Mizoguchi, the artist, for her willingness to share her beautiful works on kimonos and textiles with art lovers in Corpus Christi. The exhibition corner has not been opened. I have not seen her works thoroughly, yet I am certain that her works would demonstrate both traditional and modern esthetics of Japan. Her works embody the artistic sophistication of Japanese craftsmanship.

It is my sincere hope that this exhibition will help bridge two cultures, deepen the friendship of peoples of Japan and Texas.
