Research Student Scholarship

Research Student Scholarships offer college graduates and graduate students the opportunity to study and research a specific field at a Japanese university.

FIELDS OF STUDY

  • HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES:
    Literature, History, Aesthetics, Law, Politics, Economics, Commerce, Pedagogy, Psychology, Sociology, Music, Fine Arts, etc.
  • NATURAL SCIENCES:
    Pure Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Fisheries, Pharmacology, Medicine, Dentistry, Home Economics, etc.

Your field of study should be in an area that will allow you to benefit from the opportunity to study at a Japanese university.

QUALIFICATIONS (for 2010 Scholarship)

  • AGE: Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1975.
  • ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be university or college graduates and have completed at least 16 years of formal education.
  • LANGUAGE: Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese and receive instruction in that language. For those studying in certain fields, Japanese language ability may be required.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: June 26, 2009.

EXAMINATION AND INTERVIEW (TENTATIVE): July 14, 2009.

ARRIVAL IN JAPAN: April or October 2010.

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
  • ALLOWANCE: 152,000 yen per month plus a one-time settling-in allowance of 25.000 yen. (Subject to change)
  • TRANSPORTATION: The grantee will be supplied with an economy-class air ticket to and from Japan.
  • SCHOOL FEES: Fees for entrance examinations, matriculation and tuition at universities will be paid by the Japanese Governement.

The specific award amounts and arrival benefits of each scholarship listed above are current as of April 2009. These details are subject to change.

Although applicants may request a specific host institution in any of the above scholarships, official host institution assignments are made by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science & Technology. The Ministry's decision in this regard will be considered final.
