Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation to William H. Weiland, former President of the Japan-America Society of Houston

Mr. William H. Weiland, member of the Executive Committee and former President of the Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH)
On December 1, 2020, the Government of Japan announced the recipients of the 2020 Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation, which includes Mr. William H. Weiland, member of the Executive Committee and former President of the Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH). Mr. Weiland is to receive an award certificate and a commemorative gift in recognition of his contributions promoting the mutual understanding between Japan and the United States in Houston.
 
Mr. Weiland, a Houston lawyer, has served as a member of the Executive Committee of JASH at various periods over the past 30 years, and as Vice-President and President in 2013-2019. He has worked to define the purpose of JASH, strengthen its financial condition, broaden its appeal to the Houston community, and improve the Houston Japan Festival. Under Mr. Weiland’s leadership, JASH launched new initiatives such as the Japan Update Houston Conference (now the Japan Currents Houston Conference) to help raise the profile of Japan in Houston.
 
From 1988 through 1992, Mr. Weiland devoted substantial person time and effort to the development and construction of the Japanese Garden in Hermann Park, acting as co-head for the U.S. side of the cooperative efforts to secure support for the garden project from the Houston business community, Japanese companies in Houston, and the City of Houston.
 
Mr. Weiland remains an active member of the JASH Board of Directors and serves as the Co-President of Japan Festival of Houston, Inc.
