On July 9, the Consulate General of Japan in Houston held a “Tanabata Matsuri” at Children’s Museum Houston.  Tanabata is a Japanese festival celebrating the reunion of Orihime and Hikoboshi, two celestial lovers separated by the Milky Way and allowed to meet only once a year.

Returning after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event introduced children and parents to Japanese culture through celebration of the Tanabata Star Festival.

This year, many parents and children enjoyed making tanzaku (Tanabata wishing strips), folding origami, solving Tanabata-themed magnetic mazes, and building a magpie bridge to reunite Orihime and Hikoboshi (the climax of the Tanabata story). Additionally, the consulate provided a kamishibai performance (Japanese picture-story) and Kendama USA offered a showcase for kendama (Japanese cup-and-ball toy). The event was a wonderful opportunity for children to experience Japan in a fun environment and for parents to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture.

*We would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for their cooperation in making this event happen.
