Oklahoma Sake Tasting Event
2022/11/23

On November 17, the Consulate General of Japan in Houston and the Japan-America Society of Oklahoma co-hosted an "Oklahoma Sake Tasting" at Yuzo Sushi Tapas, a Japanese restaurant in Oklahoma City.
The purpose of the event was to promote and increase the consumption of Japanese sake in Oklahoma by inviting those in a position to sell, serve, and introduce sake, such as restaurant personnel, sake distributors, and others in the Oklahoma City area with an interest in Japan and Japanese cuisine.
Consul General Murabayashi opened the event, saying that sake is what brings out the best in Japanese food. He expressed hope that the participants would take the opportunity to learn more about sake and spread its appeal to as many people as possible.
Ms. Yuri Eales (WSET Level 1 Award in Sake) gave a lecture on the basics of sake, its types and characteristics, and matching sake with Japanese food. From this lecture, participants deepened their understanding of how to enjoy sake by actually comparing varieties and exploring food pairings.
A performance from a local taiko drumming group added excitement to the event, as did demonstrations of kendo and iaido. Sake samples from the sister cities of Oklahoma municipalities in Akita, Tochigi, and Kyoto were selected for the event (see note below), and some participants shared stories related to the sister city exchange. In this way, the event also provided an opportunity for participants to experience Japanese culture and affirm the friendship between Japan and Oklahoma.
