On February 23rd, Consul-General Fukushima attended a Day of Remembrance at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas.  Commemorating the forced relocation and internment of Japanese Americans following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the event also celebrated the unique contributions that Japanese Americans made towards the United States’ war efforts.

At the ceremony, Dr. Abby Grubb of San Jacinto College taught more about this history with her lecture Go for Broke: Japanese American WWII Experience, while the documentaries Proof of Loyalty: Kazuo Yamane and the Nisei Soldiers of Hawaii and Honor and Sacrifice: The Roy Matsumoto Story recounted the exceptional stories of Japanese American individuals serving the U.S. military during World War II.  The drumming group, Austin Taiko, added the color of Japanese culture to the event with two performances.

Outdoors, attendees were invited to take part in Japanese activities and crafts, such as painting sakura (cherry blossoms) or competing in a game of chopsticks skills.  Consul-General Fukushima was also given a tour of the museum’s Garden of Peace – a Japanese-style garden gifted by Japan in honor of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz.
