On May 3rd, Consul-General Fukushima paid a courtesy call to the Honorable Randy Weber, who serves as the congressman for TX-14 (Galveston) in the U.S. House of Representatives. During their meeting, Consul-General Fukushima thanked the congressman for his contributions to the bilateral relationship as a member of the U.S.-Japan Congressional Caucus, and expressed his desire to further strengthen ties between Texas and Japan.
Representative Weber replied by noting the positive diplomatic relations that the two countries enjoy, and recognizing the important contribution Japanese companies have made to the U.S. economy. The congressman went on to express his optimism that relations between Texas and Japan will prosper even more in the future, and emphasized the particular importance of the Freeport LNG project, which is scheduled to begin exporting LNG to Japan later in 2019, and will continue to do so over the next 20 years. Congressman Weber, as a key member of U.S. House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, also affirmed the value of U.S.-Japan cooperation on the International Space Station (ISS), and said that he would like to see closer collaboration between the two nations on the project.
