On September 20th, Consul-General Fukushima paid a courtesy call to the newly appointed Texas Secretary of State Ruth Ruggero Hughs in the state capital of Austin.

The Consul-General began the meeting by congratulating Secretary Hughs on her recent appointment, before discussing Governor Abbott’s economic development trip to Japan. Within Texas, Japanese companies have made significant contributions to the state economy by investing and creating jobs. The Consul-General expressed his thanks for the Governor’s trip, whose main purpose is to highlight and further strengthen these ties.

Secretary Hughs said she was impressed with the Toyota Motor Manufacturing facility in San Antonio, which she had visited a few days earlier with Governor Abbott when the company announced its significant new investment in the factory. She went on to speak about her experience as the former Chairwoman of the Texas Workforce Commission, where she saw the significant contributions that Japanese companies have made to Texas, including Daikin’s training program for young workers. Secretary Hughs and Consul-General Fukushima expressed their hope for even closer cooperation in the future.
