On October 16th, Consul-General Fukushima visited the port city of Corpus Christi, about 185 miles southwest of Houston, where he paid a courtesy call to Mayor Joe McComb.

The city is well known as a scenic tourist destination with a pleasant warm climate, and its refinery and petrochemical sectors are thriving with a steady supply of energy reserves coming from the Texas oil and gas industries.

The Consul-General thanked the mayor for the support and cooperation that his city government has given to Japanese companies in the region, especially Mitsubishi Heavy Industries who are active in the engineering phase of a massive joint-venture petrochemical plant that recently held its ground-breaking ceremony.

Mayor McComb said that he was pleased to have Japanese companies collaborating in the region’s major industries, supplying cutting-edge technical capabilities, and helping these sectors to expand. He noted that Corpus Christi is growing into the nation’s largest port for energy exports, and said that he would welcome more cooperation and investment from Japanese companies, as he expects even greater business opportunities in the future.

The Consul-General and Mayor also discussed the Sister City relationship between Corpus Christi and Yokosuka, which has been active for more than 50 years. Both agreed that the relationship, and especially the youth exchange program, is a cornerstone for mutual cultural understanding between residents and should be continued for many years to come.
