On November 17th, Consul-General Fukushima took part in the Aki Matsuri Fall Festival hosted by the Japan America Society of Greater Austin (JASGA), which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Taniguchi Japanese Garden in Austin. The festival was held in the garden under pleasant sunny weather, and it brought together local enthusiasts of Japanese culture, admirers of Japanese gardens, and members of JASGA.

The Taniguchi Garden, which was established a half-century ago, has the longest history of any Japanese garden in Texas. It is a masterpiece of garden-design that was created by Isamu Taniguchi, a Japanese-American who experienced life in a relocation camp during the war. In designing and building the garden, Mr. Taniguchi imbued it with a message of peace as he sought to express his gratitude to the local community. JASGA has been hard at working cleaning the garden and seeing to its upkeep. The autumn festival was a great success, as participants enjoyed and cheered the various Japanese cultural activities on display, including exhibitions of Taiko drumming, Kendo swordsmanship, and Nichibu dancing.
