JET Programme

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program invites young professionals to experience a year in Japan.
The JET Program is one of the longest and most successful international exchange programs between Japan and the United States. Each year a nationwide search is conducted for qualified and enthusiastic candidates.
For more information on how to apply for the JET Program, please visit the Embassy of Japan’s JET Program USA webpage: https://jetprogramusa.org/ Applications are available through the U.S. Embassy of Japan once a year in the fall on the website listed above. Applicants can apply for one of two available positions:
- Assistant Language Teacher (ALT)
ALTs, who make-up the majority of the program participants, are mostly placed in public middle and high schools where they assist Japanese Teachers of English (JTEs). Many ALTs also contribute to their school communities through extra-curricular activities and other community events. It is not required to have previous Japanese language knowledge to apply, however a strong interest in learning Japanese is desirable.
- Coordinator for International Relations (CIR)
CIRs are placed in prefectural and municipal government offices as well as international associations. The CIR position varies widely depending on the contracting organization. As a CIR, you might implement international exchange or language education programs, receive guests from abroad, give speeches, or assist with translation and interpreting. A functional level of Japanese language is required for the CIR position. JLPT 2 and above is considered appropriate for the CIR position.
