Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation for Elaine Browning, former President of JASDFW

On August 20, 2021, the Government of Japan announced the recipients of the 2021 Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation, which included Ms. Elaine Browning,
former President of the Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth (JASDFW). Ms. Browning is to receive an award certificate and commemorative gift in recognition of her many contributions toward promoting mutual understanding between Japan and the United States in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Ms. Browning lived in Japan twice during the 1990s, working there first as an English teacher and curriculum consultant for a large juku (cram school) in Mie Prefecture, and later as an adjunct professor in the School of Economics at Sophia University, Tokyo. She has served as a JASDFW board member from 1997 to 2005 and from 2011 to present, including in leadership roles such as President from 2014 to 2016, and Elected Director from 2018 to present.
Ms. Browning also served as the Host Cities Coordinator for the 2012 Japan-America Grassroots Summit in North Texas organized by the John Manjiro-Whitfield Commemorative Center for International Exchange (CIE), and promoted subsequent Japan-America Grassroots Summits on behalf of JASDFW and CIE in Shimane Prefecture and Oita Prefecture. During her board service in the early 2000s, she organized JASDFW’s Women’s Outreach group. She also initiated and chaired an English-language essay contest for the Japanese community in celebration of JASDFW’s 35th anniversary in 2005.
