Bento Lecture and Workshop at Houston ISD
2023/3/18

On March 5, 2023, the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston, in cooperation with the Houston Independent School District and Asia Society Texas Center, held a Bento Lecture & Workshop at Wheatley High School. About 30 students from the school's culinary training program participated in the event.
Chef Naoki Yoshida, who runs a Japanese restaurant in Houston, gave a lecture about Japanese bento culture to the participants. The students were then able to try their hand at making bento. Participants learned about Japanese food preparation by cooking Karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken) and Chicken Teriyaki. They also experienced the uniqueness of Japanese side dishes such as Dashimaki Tamago (rolled egg) and Tsukemono (Japanese pickles), and were taught how to plate them artistically.
