On March 12, Consul General Murabayashi hosted an orientation and lunch reception honoring Mr. Evan Shetina, recipient of a 2024 MEXT Research Student Scholarship. The competitive award from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (abbreviated to MEXT in English) fully funds post-graduate education at a Japanese institution.

The Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship Program aims to contribute to the development of Japan and the world by accepting outstanding international students from overseas, thereby contributing to promotion of international exchange and friendship, development of human resources in other countries, advancement of internationalization of Japanese universities, improvement of education and research capabilities, and internationalization and revitalization of society at large.

Mr. Shetina is a graduate of the UT Jackson School of Geosciences and will be studying geophysics at Tohoku University from April 2024 through March 2026, researching applications of GIS analysis of geodetic data to the study of earthquakes and volcanos.

At the reception, Consul General Murabayashi extended his best wishes for a fulfilling study abroad experience and expressed his hope that the student would become a great bridge between the U.S. and Japan. The attendees, including the scholarship selection committee members and former students of the Japanese Government Scholarship Program, congratulated Mr. Shetina on his success and offered advice on life in Japan, graduate study, future work, and opportunities to contribute to the local community.
