On February 8, the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston hosted a Japanese food demonstration at Rice University (Lovett College) in Houston. The event was led by Shinji Takahashi, Chef at the Consul General’s official residence.

First, Dr. Naoko Ozaki, Lecturer in Japanese and Residential Associate for Rice University, introduced Chef Takahashi. Next, dozens of students, including Japanese language learners, learned to make five kinds of temari-sushi (ball-shaped sushi topped with ingredients), including that with smoked salmon. Attendees also prepared omurice (rice omelet), kinpira gobo (burdock cooked in sugar and soy sauce), fried and tempura-style okra, coffee jelly, and no-bake cheesecake – all under the guidance of Chef Takahashi. Afterwards, approximately 100 students and dormitory staff members enjoyed the cooked dishes. Participants had the opportunity to experience Japanese cuisine created with ingredients available in Houston.
