Tanabata Matsuri
2025/8/19

On August 3rd, the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston co-hosted the “Tanabata Festival” with collaboration from the Japan-America Society of Houston (JASH) and the Children’s Museum Houston. More than 350 visitors attended the event at the Museum, where they enjoyed a kendama workshop and performance by Mr. Michael Martin from Kendama USA, as well as a calligraphy workshop led by JASH. Children wrote their wishes on colorful tanzaku (paper strips) and hung them on bamboo branches. They also watched a kamishibai (paper theater) telling of the story of Orihime, the weaving princess, and Hikoboshi, the cowherd. This event allowed families to experience the customs of Tanabata while learning about Japanese traditions in a fun and engaging way.
The bamboo used for the event was generously provided by Hermann Park Conservancy. We extend our heartfelt thanks for their kind support.
