On September 6 and 7, “Japan Festival Houston” was held at Hermann Park near central Houston. The largest Japanese cultural event in the southern United States, the theme of this year’s festival was “Legacy” in honor of its founder, Mr. Glen Yoshiaki Gondo.

At the venue, Takarazuka Revue alumni, Japanese martial artists, taiko drummers, dancers, and chorus groups gave dazzling performances. The “Texas Kendama Open 2025” also took place, contributing to a rich and diverse program. Festival-goers enjoyed food stalls reminiscent of traditional Japanese festivals, as well as the sake tasting village, allowing them to fully experience the charm of Japanese culture throughout the two-day event.

At the Consulate-General of Japan in Houston’s booth, children and families created “teru teru bōzu” charms to ward off the rain, introducing many to this Japanese tradition. The activity received a very positive response. A Japanese trivia quiz gave Japan enthusiasts a fun opportunity to test their knowledge and contributed to a lively atmosphere. Visitors of all ages could also enjoy trying on traditional Japanese attire such as yukata and happi coats, providing a valuable opportunity to engage with Japanese culture.
