Thank you Shara. Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen: Good Evening.

It is my pleasure to be here with you tonight as the Japan-America Society of Houston celebrates its 41st anniversary. As Consul-General in Houston for more than two years now, I must say that I have had the opportunity to witness your great works first hand .

Japan and the United States have cultivated their relationship for over 150 years, and this relationship is as important now as ever. Our countries share common values of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and a belief in an open market economy. With the many struggles and challenges facing us all these days, it is important that we can rely on these partnerships.

Japan-America Societies around the nation are at the forefront of Japan-related events and carry out the large role of further strengthening Japan-U.S. relations. In many ways, the Japan-America Society of Houston is the heart of the Japanese culture in the Houston community.

The Japan Festival which has grown tremendously over the last 16 years has become what the Houston Press calls “the best festival in town.” And while the festival is possibly the most popular achievement, events like the Japanese Language Speech Contest, the Chiba-Houston sister city relation, Japanese language courses, and countless other wonderful events continue to contribute to the community and helps to keep Japanese culture interesting and fresh.

As our Consulate office is located here in this city, we obviously have a close bond with JASH. I can say without hesitation that it is an honor and a privilege to work closely with JASH throughout the year.I sincerely hope that JASH will continue to achieve great success for many more years to come. Thank you and congratulations.
